SRINAGAR, Dec 25: Amid severe cold conditions, a thick layer of fog engulfed Kashmir today affecting flow of traffic and forcing people to stay indoors.

Most parts of the Valley including Srinagar was wrapped in a thick blanket of fog, reducing visibility and causing inconvenience to commuters.
The flow of traffic was slow as the visibility was hardly a few meters. However, in the afternoon fog vanished and sun came out, giving a little bit respite from the intense cold.
The visibility at Srinagar Airport was also poor leading to delay in morning flights.
The day temperature in Srinagar, Qazigund, Pahalgam, Kokernag, Kupwara and Gulmarg was recorded at 9.6°C, 11.8°C, 11.5°C, 12.3 °C, 11.4 °C and 9.8°C respectively.
Srinagar recorded a low of minus 2.3°C against minus 2.1°C the previous night and it was 0.3°C below normal for the city for this time of the year.
Qazigund recorded a minimum of minus 2.6°C against minus 2.0°C the previous night. The minimum temperature was 0.6°C below normal for the place.
Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 4.3°C against minus 3.9°C the previous night and it was 0.7°C above normal for the resort.
Kokernag recorded a minimum of minus 1.6°C against minus 1.1°C the previous night and the temperature was above normal by 0.5°C for the place.
Kupwara recorded a low of minus 3.0°C against minus 2.7°C the previous night and it was 0.4°C below normal there.
Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 2.6°C against minus 3.5°C the previous night and the temperature was 3.2°C above normal for the skiing resort.
Kashmir valley is under ‘Chillai-Kalan’, the 40-day harsh period of winter. While ‘Chillai-Kalan’ will end on January 30, it does not mean an end to the winter. It is followed by a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’ that occurs between January 30 and February 19 and a 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) which is from February 20 to March 1.
“Till December 26, weather is expected to be generally dry,” a Meteorological official said.
“Generally cloudy weather is expected with possibility of light snow over isolated higher reaches on December 27. Generally dry weather is expected from December 28-31,” he said, adding, “Overall there is no significant weather activity till December ending”.
He said from January 1-3, weather is expected to be generally cloudy with “light rain/snow at scattered places.”
