POONCH, Jan 10: The activists of J&K National Conference today staged a protest at Mankote, in Mendhar Sub Division, demanding restoration of democracy in Jammu and Kashmir and probe in the embezzlement of funds in the area.
Led by Javed Ahmed Rana (ex-MLA), president Pir Panjal Zone of the National Conference, the protesters assembled in Block headquarters Mankote to highlight the pressing need for revitalizing grassroots democracy in the region.
Addressing the media during the protest, Javed Rana voiced concerns over the expiry of the tenure of elected members of Urban Local Bodies and Panchayats, indicating a troubling decline in grassroots democracy. He emphasized the lack of acceptance for the continuation of District Development Councils system of Governance by the public.
Rana raised serious concern over the alleged embezzlement of funds earmarked for various Government schemes in the area. The schemes under scrutiny include those administered by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), Tribal Sub Plan funds, District Plan and State Plan.
Expressing deep concern over the misuse of these funds intended for development initiatives, Rana emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the alleged financial irregularities. He underscored the importance of ensuring transparency and accountability in the utilization of public funds, particularly those directed towards fostering economic development, infrastructure enhancement and the welfare of marginalized communities.
Highlighting the challenges faced by the residents of Mankote and adjoining areas due to ceasefire violations, Rana criticized the Government’s failure in addressing people’s issues, including the absence of basic amenities, better roads, quality education and healthcare facilities. He urged the Government to take immediate action to provide essential services to the border areas.
Rana also called upon the Government to grant ownership rights of Custodian lands to the people residing in the border areas, stressing the importance of securing the rights and livelihoods of the local population. The senior NC leader asserted that the National Conference remains steadfast in its commitment to uphold democratic values and advocating for the welfare of the people in Jammu and Kashmir.
