Settlement record in disarray

Twenty-four years ago in 1989, the Government made announcement that fresh land settlement record would be prepared in the State. The need arose because it was often found that the ownership of the land and its actual possession were mostly disputed and a large number of cases pertaining to such disputes were pending in the courts. Proper instructions were also issued to revenue officials in each halqa patwar and niabat of how the record for settlement of land had to be prepared. Two decades and half have gone by and so far not even a single village  can claim to have been taken up for land settlement  record. In 2013, the Chief Minister said that the entire land record would be digitalized and made safe but so far there are no symptoms whatsoever that any step is being taken in this direction. The general impression among the people is that land mafia is entrenched so deep in the State that they do not let the revenue officials perform their duty without interference from mafia and favour seekers. The Government should address this problem and ensure that updated record of land settlement is created within a short period of time.
