RAJOURI, Jan 16: In a `hit and run case’ in Bela Colony of Rajouri city on Monday night, an unknown car driver hit an elderly man walking on the roadside from the back and fled the spot.
Today morning, the family members of the deceased elderly person and people of the locality started a strong protest by blocking the Bela Colony road of Rajouri. The protesting family members told that 65-year-old Ghulam Hassan, a resident of Bela Colony, was returning home after getting checked from GMC Rajouri when a car coming at a high speed from behind hit him hard and the car driver escaped from the spot.
The blood-soaked man was immediately rushed to GMC Rajouri, where doctors referred him to GMC Jammu in view of his serious condition, but he died on the way.
Angry family members said that almost 15 hours have passed since the accident, but till now the police has not been able to trace the accused and arrest him. The family members demanded speedy justice and said that the police should arrest the absconding driver without wasting any time and compensate the family of the deceased elderly man as the deceased was the only earning person in his family and had to survive by working as a laborer with great difficulty.
After about an hour of protest, SHO Rajouri Inspector Aejaz Ahmed Wani reached the spot and assured the family that they have registered the case and seized the car bearing No JK 11- 4090 and launched an operation to arrest the driver. After the police assurance, the family members suspended the protest and took the body for burial.
