SRINAGAR, Jan 20: Despite acquiring the land and carrying out the necessary construction, what was supposed to be a water filtration plant in Larri Preng area of Ganderbal’s Kangan tehsil is nowhere near utilization.
According to locals, who are now demanding the land to be used for a playground, there have been some technical issues due to which the plant has not been put to use for the last several years.
“Nearly 45 kanals of land was acquired back in 2011, and it was said that a water filtration plant is to be set up there; however, despite acquiring the land and building a boundary wall, there has been no further development,” said Syed Nisar Hussain Naqshbani, former Sarpanch, Preng-B. The filtration plant, the residents said, was basically meant for the Lar area; however, they were promised that the Larri Preng area would also be provided with drinking water.
“However, now we are told that there are some issues, and if the filtration plan is put in place, it would put the entire area at risk; it has been given out as a reason for not taking on further works, as a result, the entire land has been rendered useless,” the residents said.
Keeping in view the inability of the authorities in setting up the filtration plant, the residents are now demanding the acquired land be converted into a playground for the youngsters.
“We have raised the matter with three Deputy Commissioners of the districts in the past, but all that we have received are assurances; they are not going ahead with the filtration plant. It would be better to put the land to some use in the shape of a playground because this area hasn’t got one,” said another resident, Muhammad Sidiq Malik.
