JAMMU/SRINAGAR, Jan 21: Reeling under severe cold conditions for the last several days, the winter capital, Jammu today recorded season’s lowest day temperature, about 11 degrees below normal while dry weather and cold continued in Kashmir amid night temperatures plummeting all across the region with day temperatures staying several notches above normal.
Fog and poor visibility in Jammu areas and many parts of northern region continued to disrupt normal life, badly affecting air, train and vehicular traffic. Four flights and two trains were cancelled while seven flights and eight trains were delayed at Jammu today with its impact.
A MeT official said that Jammu recorded a day temperature of 7.8 degrees Celsius, which is 11 degrees below normal (18.8 deg) on this day of the season. The night temperature in Jammu, however, was 5.6 degrees C.
Jammu’s day temperature was 5.2 degrees below that of Srinagar which recorded a day temperature of 13.0 degrees C on Sunday. Jammu continued to be colder during the day than Srinagar for the last about two weeks.
Kashmir valley has been experiencing warmer days and colder nights in the wake of a dry spell, with no significant weather activity till January 24.
The Meteorological Centre Srinagar forecasts generally cloudy weather with light snow over isolated higher reaches from January 25–26, while the weather will turn generally cloudy with light rain or snow over scattered places from January 27–28.
“There is a possibility of light to moderate rain or snow in many places, very likely during January 29–31,” the MeT office said.
Sunny days prevailed in Srinagar and other parts of the Valley during the day, as people were seen basking under the Sun.
Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.8°C against the normal of -2.3°C for the day for this time of the year; Qazigund  had a low of -5.0°C against -4.0°C a day ago, while Kokernag recorded a low of -2.3°C against the -2.0°C recorded the previous night.
Gulmarg plummeted to -5.0°C against the -4.6°C recorded the previous night. However, it was 3.2°C above normal for the ski resort; Kupwara recorded a low of -5.7°C against the -4.7°C recorded the previous day.
Pahalgam recorded a maximum of 10.3 degree Celsius which is 5.8 degree Celsius above normal; Kupwara a maximum of 13.3 degree Celsius which is 5.9 degree Celsius above normal; Kokernag recorded a maximum of 11.5 degree Celsius which is 6.1 degree Celsius above normal while Gulmarg recorded a maximum of 5. 8  degree Celsius which is 5.4 degree Celsius above normal for the place during this time of the year.
Katra township today recorded a maximum temperature of 15.5 degrees Celsius and minimum 4.6, Bhaderwah town a day temperature of 15.1 and night temperature of -0.4, Batote a maximum 15.4 and minimum 1.7 while Banihal town a minimum temperature of -1.2 and maximum 16.2 degrees Celsius. It indicates that Jammu was much colder during the day than Banihal, Bhaderwah and Batote on Sunday.
Meanwhile, an official at Jammu Airport said that two IndiGo and two Air India flights were cancelled and seven others delayed at Jammu today due to foggy weather conditions. He further disclosed that four IndiGo, two SpiceJet and one Air India flights were delayed due to fog and poor visibility in Jammu area and northern region on Sunday.
A Northern Railways spokesman told that two trains, Kota Express and Yognagri Express were cancelled at Jammu station today.
He further disclosed that Malwa Express arrived 7 hours late at Jammu station, Shalimar Express was late by 6 hours, Jhelum Express and Archana by 5 hours, Puja Express by 4 hours, Sarvodya by three hours while Tata Muri and Sealdah Express arrived two hours late at Jammu station today.
