Srinagar, Jan 25: The recently inaugurated Water Supply Scheme (WSS) in the Khadinayar area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district is providing potable water to nearly 30,000 residents.
The scheme was constructed at a total cost of Rs 1.36 cr under the Jal Jeevan Mission programme, to offer clean, potable water to the people of the area who were consuming untreated water directly from a local stream, thereby increasing the risk of waterborne diseases.
“The area was consuming unsafe water, prompting us to complete this scheme two months ahead of the scheduled deadline,” an official said.
He added that the Water Supply Scheme and the filtration plant are providing portable drinking water to the residents of the area. “Importantly, this Water Supply Sscheme draws water from a nearby natural source and does not require any power supply to operate,” he said.
Residents said that they were facing an acute shortage of water in the area, and the consumption of untreated water had made them susceptible to waterborne diseases. “This scheme has put an end to our water woes, and we are now able to consume clean drinking water,” a resident said.
