LEH, Jan 28: Representatives from various religions and the Leh Apex Body (LAB) today appealed people to participate in huge number in the scheduled “Leh Chalo” movement on February 3, 2024.
A statement said that the objective of the protest that will begin around 10 am on February 3rd at NDS Stadium in Leh is to press the Government for addressing the key issues related to the Sixth schedule.
Addressing a press conference in Leh today, Tsering Lakrok, Vice-President of the Apex Body, highlighted the background of the issue. He mentioned a prior meeting between the Apex Body and KDA with the Minister of State for Home Affairs, where they requested written confirmation of the demands.
Despite submitting detailed drafts, he said, there has been no response from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
Expressing dissatisfaction with the lack of communication, the Apex Body announced a peaceful protest on February 3 to draw attention to the delayed and ignored demands from the Government of India (GoI).
Lakrok emphasized that this protest is not a one-time event; it will continue with intensified efforts in the future.
In solidarity with Sonam Wangchuk’s 21-day hunger strike, the Apex Body announced full support to his (Wangchuk’s) cause and urged the people of Ladakh to stand with him.
Lakrok asserted that the struggle for Ladakh’s demands should persist until the GoI addresses them, emphasizing the need for resolution before the upcoming MP Election’s code of conduct.
Acknowledging the potential disturbance in Ladakh during the elections due to ongoing protests and hunger strikes, Lakrok appealed to the GoI for a final decision on the four demands.
He called on the people of Ladakh to gather at NDS Stadium at 10 am on February 3 to participate in the Leh Chalo movement.
Responding to questions, Lakrok added that the KDA has also supported the protest and will join in the collective demonstration.
