SRINAGAR, Jan 31: An elderly man, bedridden due to illness, was charred to death today in the Jawahar Nagar area.
Officials told Excelsior that the ground floor of a three-storey residential house in Jawahar Nagar caught fire in the evening, trapping the man inside as he was unable to move.
“The Control Room in Srinagar received a report about a fire incident near the post office in Jawahar Nagar. Immediate dispatch of fire tenders from the Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES) headquarters and F&ES LD followed,” officials stated.
Upon arrival, officials encountered a three-story residential structure with the ground floor ablaze. “A comprehensive firefighting and rescue operation was initiated, successfully bringing the fire under control.”
Regrettably, officials mentioned that during the rescue efforts, they discovered the lifeless body of Bashir Ahmad, a 75-year-old individual, in a room on the ground floor.
Preliminary inquiry findings suggest that only two elderly occupants, including one bedridden individual, were present in the building.
“The ignition of the mattress, on which Bashir Ahmad was lying, resulted from negligence associated with an LPG heater.”
It was stated that due to his serious illness and bedridden condition, Bashir Ahmad was unable to escape, leading to his demise before the arrival of the Fire and Emergency Services.
