Rains lash Valley, snowfall in hills of Kashmir

Srinagar, Jan 31: Rains lashed Srinagar and other parts of Valley while hills received snowfall today breaking the dry spell in the region.
Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgam, Pir Kil Gali, Radzanpass, Simthan and other areas in the hills of Kashmir received snowfall.

Srinagar and other parts of the Valley were also lashed by rains ending the prolonged dry spell in Kashmir that saw driest January after 58 years.
The Meteorological department (MeT) said that there is a possibility of heavy snowfall over few higher reaches of North, North western and South Kashmir areas till tomorrow morning.
“Few lower reaches and plains of North, Northwestern and South Kashmir region may receive snowfall depth of 6-8 inches, while plains of Central Kashmir may receive 2-4 inches during tonight and tomorrow early morning,” the officials in the MeT department said.
“On February 2, the weather is expected to remain generally dry with possibility of very light snow at isolated higher reaches while on February 3rd and 4th, there is a possibility of light to moderate rain and snow at many places of J&K,” he said.
Moreover, the MeT officials said that the weather will improve from February 5 as dry weather is expected from February 5 to 12
The MeT has also issued an advisory, saying that due to intermittent light to moderate snow since past three days over higher reaches, significant snow accumulated over higher reaches of North and Northwestern parts of Kashmir division which lead to temporary closure of roads of higher reaches and important passes, thereby the travellers are advised to plan accordingly.
Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management issued an avalanche warning for 6 districts in the next 24 hours amid inclement weather.
According to a statement, an avalanche with low danger level is likely to occur above 2800 and 3500 metres in Doda and Ganderbal districts in the next 24 hours.
The statement read that an avalanche with medium danger level is likely to occur above 2400 metres in Poonch, Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara districts in the next 24 hours.
It advised people living in these areas to take precautions and avoid venturing in the avalanche prone areas.
Meanwhile, night temperature recorded a rise with Srinagar recording a low of 2.2°C against 0.8°C previous night and it was 2.9°C above normal for the city for this time of the year.
Qazigund recorded a minimum of 0.4°C, same as the previous night. The minimum temperature was 2.4°C above normal for the town.
Pahalgam recorded a low of 0.1°C against minus 3.3°C the previous night and it was 6.2°C above normal for the resort.
Kokernag recorded a minimum of minus 0.2°C against 0.7°C on the previous night and the temperature was above normal by 2.2°C for the place.
Kupwara town in north Kashmir recorded a low of 1.3°C against 0.3°C the previous night and it was 3.6°C above normal there.
Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 3.0°C against minus 6.0°C the previous night and the temperature was 4.4°C above normal for the skiing resort.
Srinagar recorded a maximum of 9.1degree Celsius temperature today which was 2.2 degree Celsius above normal for the city for this time of the year.
Qazigund recorded a maximum of 11.0 degree Celsius which is 3.8 degree Celsius above normal for the place during this time of the year.
Pahalgam recorded a maximum of 10.4 degree Celsius which is 5.5 degree Celsius above normal for the place during this time of the year.
Kupwara recorded a maximum of 2.8 degree Celsius which is 4.6 degree Celsius below normal for the place during this time of the year.
Kokernag recorded a maximum of 11.3 degree Celsius which is 5.4 degree Celsius above normal for the place during this time of the year.
Gulmarg recorded a maximum of 0.2 degree Celsius which is 0.3 degree Celsius below normal for the place during this time of the year.
As ‘Chillai-Kalan’, the 40-day harsh period of winter ended, Kashmir is presently in the middle of 20-day-long winter period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’ that ends on February 18 and a 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) which starts from February 18 to February 28.
Meanwhile, Army today rescued a team of skiers stranded in Pattan area of Baramulla district.
An official said that post of Banal ex Pattan Bn recieved info at 0730 hours about a skiing team of 7 individuals including 2 foreign nationals (Switzerland) has stranded due to bad weather after coming down from Sunshine peak.
He said that the SDPO Tangmarg was informed and the rescue party under Maj Abhay received the information around 0730 hours pm and tried to establish contact with the stranded skiers.
He said tha at around 0945 hours, the rescue team was able to establish contact with the stranded civilian who were occupying a dhok near Alu post and stayed put for the night as the approach route was not accessible.
The individuals were brought to Banal and given first aid and meals.
