JAMMU, Feb 10: Over 150 BJP leaders and activists were arrested at Ranbireshwar Chowk as police foiled their bid to ghearo State Assembly on the first day of Budget Session today.
The arrested people were packed in two police buses and some private mini buses and taken to District Police Lines Gandhi Nagar where from they were released in the afternoon.
Led by BJP State president and party MLA from Nagrota, Jugal Kishore Sharma and leader of legislative party, Ashok Khajuria, a large number of BJP leaders and activists assembled at Indira Chowk in the morning were from they took a procession towards the State Assembly in their bid to ghearo it to protest against the failure of NC-Congress Coalition on all fronts.
With banners and placards in their hands, the BJP activists who included a sizable number of women workers and nine party MLAs also were shouting slogans against the misrule of coalition and termed it a total failure on all fronts.
The agitated BJP men crossed the first barricade and reached near Shalamar Chowk to proceed towards the Secretariat. However, the police did not let them go ahead from Shalamar Chowk and blocked the entire road. This resulted into a scuffle between police and agitating BJP activists and in the melee some BJP activists also received minor injuries.
BJP spokesman said that 12 of its workers received injuries prominent among them also included Shilpi Verma, Naresh Kumar, Ishtiyaq Wani and Raj Kumar. Naresh Sharma and Raj Kumar were hospitalized for treatment also, he added.
Addressing the demonstrators Jugal Kishore Sharma said that BJP will continue to raise the issues of public concern and expose the Government for mis-governance, corruption, discrimination with Jammu and Ladakh regions and plight of refugees, Kashmiri migrants, SCs, STs, OBCs, Gujjar, youth, farmers etc. He said that the State Government has completed five years in the office and the party MLAs will seek explanation on the floor of the House for its anti-people, anti-youth and pro-Kashmir policies in the current session of Legislature and mobilize public opinion and pressure to realize depth of peoples anger against the Government on account of their grievances and force it to take effective steps to redress the genuine problems of the masses in all three regions of the State.
Meanwhile, over a dozen party activists of Jammu Rural district under District President Sukhdev Singh and Omi Khajuria were arrested from party office at Dream City in Muthi area when they were proceeding towards Jammu to join the Assembly ghearo march. They were taken to Domana Police Station.
