NEW DELHI, Feb 5 : More than 14 lakh children have been rescued from child labour and provided with education, vocational training, mid-day meals, stipends, and healthcare under the National Child Labour Project (NCLP) scheme so far, Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment Rameshwar Teli said in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

In a written reply in the Lok Sabha today, Teli said, “Under the NCLP scheme, the children in the age group of 9?14 years are rescued from work and enrolled in the NCLP Special Training Centres (STCs), where they are provided with bridge education, vocational training, mid-day meals, stipends, health care, etc. before being mainstreamed into the formal education system.”

Around 14.3 lakh children have been rescued from work, rehabilitated, and mainstreamed under the National Child Labour Project (NCLP) scheme since its inception, he said.

The Ministry of Labour and Employment has implemented the NCLP scheme for the rehabilitation of child labourers through district project societies under the chairmanship of the district magistrate since the inception of the scheme in 1988.

The NCLP scheme has now been subsumed under the Samagara Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) scheme, with effect from April 1, 2021. Henceforth, the recused child labourers will be mainstreamed into the formal education system through STC operations under SSA. At present, no Special Training Centres (STC) are functional under the NCLP scheme. No new STCs under the NCLP Project have been approved after March 31, 2021, he said. (UNI)
