Veteran broadcaster, poet Nazki passes away

Srinagar Feb 6 : A veteran broadcaster, poet and former Director Doordarshan Srinagar, Farooq Nazki, passed away today after prolonged illness.
He was admitted to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital Katra after a heart attack where he breathed his last. He was being treated there for multiple health issues and was on dialysis at the hospital for the last few months.
His body was brought to Srinagar for burial at the family’s ancestral graveyard at Kathi Darwaza, Srinagar.
Nazki started his career as a journalist and a casual newsreader and eventually headed Radio Kashmir Srinagar as Director. He later headed Doordarshan Srinagar. Besides, he was the media adviser of Dr Farooq Abdullah for many years and later to his son, Omar Abdullah.
An impressive poet, several of Nazki’s poetic collections have bagged awards including Kanzalwanus Naar Heutun and Sat Baran. In 1995, he won the Sahitya Academy award in Kashmiri language literature for his book of poetry, Naar Hyutun Kanzal Wanas (Fire in the eyelashes). He has also won the state Cultural Academy Award for both that work and Lafz Lafz Noha.
Born on February 14 1940, he is survived by his son, a medical doctor, and two daughters.
