JAMMU, Feb 17: The Union Ministry of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj today sanctioned 12 road upgradation projects and construction of a bridge at the cost of Rs 152 crore in Jammu and Kashmir.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Giriraj Singh for nod to road infrastructure projects in the Union Territory.
“Approval has been given by the Rural Development Ministry for 12 roads with 134 kilometers length and a bridge at an estimated cost of Rs 152.38 crore. With this, a total of 233 road projects having length of 1750 kilometers and 66 bridges falling in the alignment of these roads, have been sanctioned for upgradation at an estimated cost of Rs 2245.46 crore under PMGSY III programme for J&K,’’ officials told the Excelsior.
Among 12 roads, five have been approved for Budgam district, two each in Poonch and Kupwara and one each for Anantnag, Ganderbal and Srinagar. Poonch is the only district where bridge has been sanctioned.
Asserting that the PMGSY Programme was launched in J&K during the year 2001-02 to provide connectivity to eligible unconnected habitations with 250 plus population as per 2001 census, the officials said these habitations are to be connected through all-weather roads.
“Under this programme, 2140 rural habitations were found eligible to be connected for which the Union Ministry of Rural Development has sanctioned 3425 works including 239 bridges (2741 new connectivity works and 684 up gradation works) under PMGSY-I & II for construction of 19049 Km road length at an estimated cost of Rs.12565 crore.
Despite adverse working conditions, they said J&K has achieved 98.50% of the sanctioned programme under PMGSY-I&II.
“As many as 2118 habitations have been connected as on date while remaining 23 habitations are targeted to be connected by March, 2024. 17985.10 kilometers road length has been constructed under the scheme against the sanctioned programme. Under PMGSY-III, 521.09 kilometer road length has been upgraded so far,’’ the officials said.
They added that an expenditure of Rs.11723.57 crore has been incurred so far.
“J&K has exceptionally performed in making progress and achieving goals under PMGSY since 2019 there by constructing 9000 kilometers of the road length. The UT has consecutively ranked 3rd at the national level during 2020-21 and 2021-22 in terms of road length constructed in a year,’’ the officials said.

He further said that the road upgradation projects will benefit hundreds of habitations in six districts of Jammu and Kashmir.
“A two lane bridge for border district of Poonch will ensure greater ease of travel and it will connect villages to prosperity and contribute in overall socio-economic development,’’ Sinha said.
Approved roads include upgradation of Ranbirpora to Cheki Isshardas via Chittisinghpora road in Achabal block of Anantnag district, Nagam to Chrarisharief via Hapatnar, Hayatpora to Qazipora. Kremshore to Hayatpora, Babagund to Arigam via Klanoora and Bugroo and Mirgund to Arizal via Shoolipora Ramhama in Budgam district, Dursuma to Anderwan via Yarmuqam in Ganderbal, Handwara Magam Champora via Tulwari, Doolipora and Gungbug to Chandigam via Dever in Kupwara district, Harni to Bhimber Gali and MRL01-KM 3rd of T04 to Pathanatir via Salwah in Poonch district, Saidpora to Kreshbal in Srinagar district and 51.40 meter two lane bridge on KM 3rd of T04 to Pathanatir via Salwah at RD 4/200 bridge in Poonch district.
All proposals are meant for upgradation.
