Srinagar, Feb 27: The Department of Wildlife Protection’s Wetland Division and the Wular Conservation and Management Authority (WUCMA) conducted an orientation session today for participants of the annual bird census exercise.
A spokesperson from the department said that the orientation, integral to the Asian Water Bird Census, took place at the Indian Institute of Hotel Management in the Rajbagh area of Srinagar.
This annual census, he said, conducted in January-February, aims to evaluate avian population visiting wetlands of the region. “Experts and conservationists from institutions such as the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), Wildlife SOS JK, and various NGOs including WCF, WRCF, SRDE, SEED, Birds of Kashmir, and Kashmir Bird Watch, along with scholars and students from SKUAST and the University of Kashmir, will also participate in census, “he said.
He said the event’s chief guest, APCCF Kashmir and Chief Executive Director of WUCMA T. Rabi Kumar, highlighted the pivotal role of birds as ecological barometers for wetland healing and urged stakeholders to collaborate actively in resource mobilisation for effective wetland management.
