SRINAGAR, Mar 1: A family of six orphaned siblings in Taripora Narwa of Sheeri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district is living in a makeshift tin shed due to official apathy, denying them a proper roof over their heads.
The family’s plight stems from the tragic demise of their father last year, who was working as a contingent paid worker within the Education Department. Despite their contribution of land for a school and a vital water supply tank in the locality, promises of employment and compensation from the concerned departments remain unfulfilled.
“We have been abandoned by both the Education and PHE Departments. We sacrificed our land for the greater good, only to be left in the cold. With both our parents gone, this shed is all we have. We shiver in the biting cold, with constant threat of wild animals,” Mudasir Ahmad, one of the siblings, said.
The family’s neighbour, Bashir Ahmad Khan, echoes their frustration, emphasising the Government’s deafening silence on the matter. “They donated land for essential infrastructure, expecting rightful compensation. Yet, the Government’s indifference knows no bounds. The department has honoured their commitments, plunging this family into further despair,” he stated.
In response, Chief Education Officer Baramulla, Balbir Singh Raina, acknowledged the family’s contribution, “The family generously donated one kanal of land for the school’s construction, with the assurance of employment. While the deceased was duly employed as a contingent paid worker, his untimely demise has left us grappling with unresolved matters,” he said.
He further mentioned that he has instructed concerned officials to expedite land documentation for prompt compensation. “We are exploring avenues to provide the family with the solace and support they rightfully deserve,” he assured.
