IMPHAL, Mar 1: Manipur Assembly on Friday unanimously resolved to urge the Government of India to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur in the interest of the State in particular and of the Nation in general.
A Private Member Resolution was moved by Leishiyo Keishing which was changed to a government resolution.
Keishing said in his constituency Kambing more than 5000 people were found during a drive to take biometrics of immigrants from Myanmar.
Lots of people from Myanmar came to Manipur due to unrest in Myanmar. The population of indigenous population has declined he added.
A member said Illegal immigrants have become the majority in many places. He cited the example of the border town Moreh where Meitei, Muslim, Naga, Tamil were residing but now all of them have left the town as people belonging to a particular community have controlled it.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh gave the data of large-scale increase in villages and population in Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, and Chandel districts.
Congress members staged a walkout as all the private member’s resolutions moved by Congress were not considered for discussion.
Speaker Satyabrata said the decision of the Speaker is final and there can’t be a discussion on the decision of the Speaker. (UNI)
