Balwant attends Nat’l Seminar as key speaker

JAMMU, Mar 14: Balwant Thakur, the eminent playwright and theatre director from Jammu, attended the National Seminar on playwriting in India at World’s largest literature festival organized by National Academy of Letters (Sahitya Akademi) Union Ministry of Culture.
Apart from Balwant Thakur, the discourse ‘Playwriting in India’ was addressed by top playwrights including DP Sinha, Devindera Raj Ankur, Soumitra Mitra, Dilip Borkar, Mahendra Malangiya, Y Sadanand Singh, Abhiram Bhadkamar and Bigoy Kumar Satapathy.
In his presentation, Balwant Thakur while evaluating the position and possibilities of playwriting in India, spoke at length about the origin and development of Dogri Theatre. Terming Dogri theatre amongst the vibrant movement of Indian theatre, Balwant Thakur shared his concerns about the challenges being faced by its practitioners during the post COVID period.
Stating that theatre now is in a weak position and needs special attention and support, he desired national institutions like Sahitya Akademi to create new avenues enabling support for the young playwrights.
