UT, District level panels framed to support poor prisoners

JAMMU, Mar 22: Government today ordered constitution of UT Level Oversight Committee and District Level Empowered Committee(s) for the implementation of the scheme for support to poor prisoners.
As per an order, the UT level panel headed by Principal Secretary to the Government, Home Department, with Director General of Prisons, J&K, Secretary to the Government, Department of Law Justice, and PA, Registrar General of the High Court of J&K & Ladakh as members and Secretary, State Legal Services Authority, J&K, as Member Secretary, shall call the monthly reports from the District Level Empowered Committee(s) and address any concerns highlighted by the committee(s) besides overseeing the overall implementation of the “Support to Prisoners Scheme” in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
The UT level committee shall be serviced by the Home Department, ordered the Government.
Meanwhile, the District Level Empowered Committee(s) headed by District Magistrate(s) with SP, Judge incharge of Prison, as nominee of the District Judge, Superintendent/Deputy Superintendent of the Prison and Chief Legal Aid Defence counsel/Deputy Legal Aid Defence Counsel/Assistant Legal Aid Defence Counsel as members and Secretary, District Legal Services Authority as Member Secretary will examine the cases of the poor prisoners, who are unable to pay the fine imposed on them or are unable to secure bail due to financial constraints and settle these cases, in accordance with the guidelines and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) issued in this regard besides sending monthly reports to the UT Level Oversight committee.
The District Level Empowered Committee(s) shall be serviced by the concerned District Magistrate.
