JAMMU, Feb 26: Several Opposition MLAs and member of National Conference today staged walk-out over unprecedented power cuts in twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch and several other areas.
The protest from the National Conference MLA, Ajaz Ahmed Jan started after Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Mir Saifullah admitted that besides eight hours scheduled curtailment additional curtailments are also enforced in several remote areas of Haveli constituency primarily due to unauthorized overload on the system.
“On one side huge curtailment is being enforced and on the other side electricity tariff is being charged from the consumers”, Mr Jan said while terming this as grave injustice with the people. “Whenever the power system is overloaded in Jammu the people of Rajouri-Poonch are subjected to harassment by way of huge curtailments”, he rued and contested the claims of the Minister regarding unauthorized load in Rajouri-Poonch.
Though Mir Saifullah tried to convince the agitating NC MLA and even stated that transformers in his area would be augmented very shortly to overcome the problem of power cuts yet Mr Jan was not ready to relent. In the meantime, PDP MLAs from Mendhar and Darhal, Rafiq Khan and Ch Zulfikar Ali joined the National Conference MLA in protest against the unscheduled power cuts.
BJP, NPP and JSM MLAs also joined the protest over unscheduled power cuts and resorted to sloganeering against the Power Development Department and Power Minister. “Bijli Pani De Na Sake Jo Woh Sarkar Nikami Hai”, rented the House.
After agitating over the issue for some time, all the BJP, NPP and JSM MLAs along with National Conference MLA, Aijaz Jan and PDP MLAs Rafiq Khan and Ch Zulfikar Ali staged walk-out.
Former Minister and Congress MLA, Ghulam Mohd Saroori also lodged protest over the unscheduled power cuts from his seat.
