SRINAGAR, Apr 6: Krishi Vigyan Kendras, a pioneering initiative of ICAR, completed 50 years this year and to celebrate the Golden Jubilee, Indian Council of Agricultural Research started a torch rally from Ladakh.

Symbolizing the KVK movement, the torch was handed over by DDG Extension, ICAR to Prof Dil Mohamad Makhdoomi, Director Extension, SKUAST-Kashmir who brought it to Srinagar. This torch will move across the length and breadth of the country through KVKs.
At an impressive function held today at SKUAST-K, Shalimar, the torch was presented to the Vice-Chancellor, SKUAST-K Prof Nazir Ahmad Ganai who in turn passed it on to the Programme Coordinators of KVKs of Kashmir and the Programme Coordinators of KVKs of South Kashmir, entrusted with the responsibility of carrying it to Jammu where it would be handed over to Programme Coordinators of KVKs of SKUAST Jammu.
The function was attended by the University officers, Programme Coordinators of KVKs and the entire staff of Directorate of Extension.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Dil Mohamad Makhdoomi highlighted the importance of the event. He informed that KVK movement was started 50 years back with establishment of the first KVK at Pondicherry under Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore and presently there are 724 KVKs across the country in all the districts serving as one stop solution for farmers.
Vice-Chancellor, SKUAST-K, Prof Nazir Ahmad Ganai acknowledged the role of KVKs in technology dissemination and marking SKUAST-Kashmir’s presence across the region. He unveiled the University’s resolve to strengthen KVKs and transform them into the centres of excellence for which he thanked the support of Govt of Jammu and Kashmir and ICAR.
