SRINAGAR, Apr 8: Shoppers flooded the vibrant markets across Kashmir in anticipation of Eid-ul-Fitr, which will be celebrated this week, marking the culmination of the Holy month of Ramadan.
The shopping hubs throughout the Valley buzzed with activity as people gathered to purchase clothing, footwear, and various essentials. Eateries, including those selling mutton, chicken, and bakery items, experienced a surge in demand, prompting shop owners to employ additional sales staff.
“We have observed a notable rise in footfalls, and sales have surged in recent days. With Eid just around the corner, we are hopeful for the demand to rise,” an employee at a renowned bakery and confectionery shop said.

The hustle and bustle extended beyond the confines of shops, with the streets of the summer capital bustling with activity, particularly among women and children. From early morning, shoppers thronged the markets, with their numbers swelling as the day progressed. By afternoon, thousands had converged at the city center, resulting in heavy traffic congestion and disorder on the roads. Jahangir Chowk, Amira Kadal, Residency Road, and Maharaja Bazaar were particularly affected as crowds swarmed the area for shopping.
The famous Goni Khan market in Srinagar, known for its array of shops catering to children’s wear and toys, exuded a festive atmosphere as families browsed through the various offerings. Twelve-year-old Saira, accompanied by her cousins, excitedly shared her plans: “I have applied Mehndi on both hands. Now, I am looking for bangles, hairbands, and pins. I eagerly anticipated Eid, eager to spend time with friends and family.”
A spokesperson for Goni Khan Market, Manzoor Ahmad, said, “the market draws shoppers from across the valley, especially in the days leading up to Eid. There’s a noticeable trend of last-minute shopping, particularly for children’s items, although some hesitancy persists due to soaring prices.” However, he acknowledged that the market has not fully recovered since 2019, leading to cautious spending among shoppers.
Similar scenes unfolded in major towns across the valley, with pavements transformed into bustling marketplaces by makeshift stalls. Some shops adorned with vibrant lights sought to attract even more shoppers, adding to the festive ambiance.
