Promote female, adult literacy for betterment of society: Usha Vohra

JAMMU, Feb 28: Usha Vohra, First Lady, stressed the high importance of educating women and promoting adult literacy for achieving balanced growth and development. She was speaking at a function organized by Association for Social Health in India (ASHI), at Government Middle School, Simblehar, in Jagti Panchayat.
The First Lady said that sustained advancement of women’s education is essential for promoting the general health of the society and pointed out that an educated girl is an asset for her family as well as of the society to which she belongs.
Highlighting the importance of education, she said that an educated mother brings up healthy and well developed children who, in turn are able to make significant contribution and form the productive part of the country’s population.
The First lady observed that not only women but the entire adult population at large, which is still deprived of the benefits of education, should put their foot forward to gain literacy as it is never too late to get educated. She said that a well informed citizen always holds a balanced opinion and contributes towards the development of the society.
On the occasion, First Lady distributed certificates to 55 women beneficiaries of Adult Literacy Programme which was conducted by ‘ASHI’. A New Women Adult Literacy Unit was also inaugurated by the First Lady and, on this occasion, reading and writing material was presented by her to the trainees. She also inaugurated a Cutting and Tailoring Centre and presented sewing machines and other tailoring equipments to the Centre.
On behalf of the Governor, the First lady announced that 50 desks will be provided to facilitate the students of the Government Middle School, Simblehar, who are undergoing computer training.
A colourful cultural programme by the women beneficiaries and the students of the school was presented on the occasion.
Prof. Ved Ghai was the guest of honour on the occasion. Sushma Choudhary, Sr. Vice President, ASHI, highlighted the activities of the ASHI.
Prof. Kailash Rajput, Secretary, ASHI, presented welcome address and Nasreen Khan, Joint Secretary, ASHI, presented a vote of thanks. Prof. Rita Jitendra, conducted the entire function.
