Govt forms committees for measures to improve conditions in J&K jails

JAMMU, Apr 22: In compliance to the Supreme Court order, Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory Government has accorded sanction to the constitution of District Level Committee(s) for taking various measures for improving the conditions of prisons in J&K.
Headed by Principal/District Judge ( Chairperson of the District Legal Service Authority), the committees shall assess the available infrastructure, current capacity of existing jails and requirement of constructing more jails in the district, or enhancing the capacity of existing jails to meet the standards laid down in the Model Prison Manual 2016.
The committees shall consider the implementation of steps required for incorporating Artificial Intelligence and introducing video conferencing for conducting `Mulakaats’ and telemedicine facilities, for the ease of inmates.
Further, the committee shall initiate steps to examine the requirement of expending the existing jails and acquiring land to set up new jails within the district, depending on the current capacity, occupancy and future demands of the district and come up with firm proposals.
To seek and monitor the status of all the ongoing projects, examine the needs of the district and formulate proposals are also among mandate of these District Level committees.
District Magistrate concerned, SSP, Secretary, district Legal Service Authority and Superintendent of Jail will be members of the committee.
