Shortage of doctors

Sir,
This has reference to the news item ‘India facing shortage of 10 lakh MBBS doctors’ DE Jun 27.
The shortage of doctors in India, particularly in rural areas has remained a big problem. The problem has aggravated further with a good number of doctors leaving the country for serving in other countries where they get good working conditions, and pay and perks. This group of doctors get trained at the cost of tax payers money, and when it comes to pay back to the country in terms of serving poor people here they leave the country. Though the Union Health Minister had assured the country that this unhealthy practice would be stopped, how far steps in this direction have been taken the Health Ministry knows better. This practice has to be stopped forthwith if the health delivery mechanism has to be strengthened in the country.
Besides, the Government should open more medical colleges equipped with latest infrastructure. The intake capacity of the colleges presently functioning in the country should also be increased.
The Entrance exam conducted for medical seats should also be reformated to encourage more participation of students. Merit should be given the top most priority during selections.
The doctor patients ratio therefore could be lessened if steps in this direction are initiated.
