NEW YORK, Mar 6: Indian-born US Attorney Preet Bharara and Indian-origin actress Mindy Kaling will speak at this year’s commencement ceremonies at the prestigious Harvard Law School.
Bharara and Kaling will address students and faculty on Class Day ceremonies, which will take place on May 28, according to Harvard Law Today report.
Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has been named the Commencement speaker and will address the passing out class at Harvard on May 29.
Bloomberg received his MBA from Harvard Business School and has remained closely associated with Harvard as an alumnus.
The renovated Baker Library – Bloomberg Center – is named in honour of his late father, William Henry Bloomberg, as is a professorship that was endowed in 1996.
Manhattan’s top federal prosecutor Bharara graduated from Harvard College in 1990 and earned a degree from Columbia Law School in 1993.
Bharara has served as the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York since 2009 and has an unbeaten track record of securing over 70 convictions in cases of insider trading on Wall Street.
Bharara’s office also brought visa fraud charges last year against Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade, triggering an unprecedented diplomatic row between India and the US.
Previously, Bharara had served as chief counsel and staff director of the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Administrative Oversight and the Courts, helping lead the investigation of the firing of United States Attorneys.
From 2000 to 2005, Bharara was Assistant US Attorney in the Southern District of New York, where he prosecuted a wide range of criminal cases.
Kaling, 34, is an actress, comedian and writer and is best known for her award-winning work in the television series ‘The Office’.
She is also the creator, producer and star of the series ‘The Mindy Project’.
She has received five consecutive nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series as a producer of “The Office”.
A native of Cambridge, Kaling graduated from Dartmouth College in 2001.
She also co-wrote and starred in the play ‘Matt+Ben’, which went on to make Time Magazine’s “Top Ten Theatrical Events of the Year” in 2003.
Kaling was born as Vera Mindy Chokalingam to a Tamil architect father and a Bengali gynecologist mother. (AGENCIES)
