JAMMU, Apr 30: The Dogra Sadar Sabha, Jammu and Kashmir (DSS), is going to observe the annual event ‘Save Water, Save Birds Day’ on May 4th this year, at the Dogra Sadar Sabha Bhawan, Jammu.
The event is being organized in collaboration with the Dogra Educational Trust, Shri Lakshmi Narayan Mandir Management Trust, J&K ex-Services League, Management Committee of Makkah Masjid, Bhatindi, and the Forest Department of Jammu.
This was announced by Th Gulchain Singh Charak, former Minister and President of the Dogra Sadar Sabha, while addressing media persons here today.
Charak highlighted that this initiative, launched 19 years ago by the 120-year-old sole representative body of the Dogras, aims to create public awareness and promote compassion towards birds, particularly amidst rapid urbanization and the depletion of natural water bodies, which were once abundant just a few decades ago.
Detailing the activities planned for the day, Charak disclosed that informative and motivational talks on nature preservation and wildlife conservation will be conducted during the event. The gathering is expected to include prominent citizens, educators, Forest Department officials, philanthropists, and students.
Following the talks, earthen ‘hang-pots’ will be distributed among participants, encouraging them to hang these water pots on trees and other suitable locations for birds, be it at their homes, schools, offices, parks, or workplaces.
Charak mentioned that DSS aims to distribute around a thousand earthen hang-pots among the participants, including representatives from various educational and other institutions.
Underscoring the significance of the event, Charak emphasized that besides saving the lives of birds during the scorching summer heat, the event serves as a reminder of the urgent need to conserve water, which is becoming increasingly scarce and expensive.
Charak called upon the people of Jammu to participate in large numbers and ensure that the hang-pots are placed in locations accessible to birds but beyond the reach of predators. Popularizing this intervention, he added, would allow birds to quench their thirst while providing the joy of bird-watching, especially to children and students.
Prominent among others who were present in the press conference included Col Karan Singh, Prem Sagar Gupta, G A Khwaja, Ghambhir Dev Singh Charak, Amanat Ali Shah, Lt Gen R K Sharma, S C Rekhi, and Samar Dev Singh.
