Addressing media persons here today, SSP Jammu, Dr Vinod Kumar, said that the scuffle started over a land (33 Marla) dispute between one Balbir Singh and Parshotam Singh.
He said on April 22, the incharge Police Post Greater Kailash reached at the disputed land to execute a restrain order of the court in favour of one of the parties.
He said the moment one party took possession of the land in presence of police personnel another party reached there to object the possession.
“As the situation went out of the control due to involvement of some anti-social elements/land grabbers, some prominent people again called SHO and incharge Police Post to control the situation.
“Accordingly, Incharge PP reached at the spot but the agitating parties took law into their hands in presence of the police officers to injure one Avtar Singh, who unfortunately died in GMC&H Jammu later,” said the police officer.
He said since the police officers failed to discharge their duties professionally SHO Gangyal Harmohinder Singh has been attached and Incharge Police Post Greater Kailash Puneet Singh placed under suspension. An inquiry has also been initiated against them, said the SSP Jammu.
A three-member SIT led by SDPO City South Kartik Shrotriya has also been constituted to probe the negligence of the police officers present at the crime spot, he said.
Meanwhile, on the written complaint of the uncle of the deceased person, the SSP Jammu said that 7 people including notorious land grabber Ravinder Gupta alias Gola Shah have been detained in case FIR number 39/2024 under sections 302, 307, 323, 447, and 147 IPC and more people are likely to be detained to investigate their role in the crime.
Besides Gola Shah, those detained have been identified as Parshotam Singh of Katholi, Bari Brahamana, Samba; Suraj Singh of Khartoli, Samba; Vikas Singh of Greater Kailash, Jammu; Sandeep Charak of Kothay Hoshyari, Sarore, Samba, and Rajat Jandiyal son of Ravinder Gupta alias Gola Shah.
Asked about the involvement of influential criminals in the crime, he said, “Irrespective of one’s stature and financial background, police will conduct the investigation in a highly transparent manner to ensure that the criminals are lodged behind the bars.”
The SSP Jammu also issued a stern warning to other people indulging in the crime of land grabbing, claiming the police force has been making Zonal Task Forces to ensure justice to the victims of land grabbing by working in cohesion with the revenue authorities.
“I am issuing a stern warning to the criminals to either mend their ways or get ready to face the music,” he warned.
