The recent incident in Greater Kailash, Jammu, where a 39-year-old man lost his life in a land dispute, underscores the critical need for the effective enforcement of law and order. This is the third death in recent days in land-grabbing incidents. The response from the authorities, while commendable in certain aspects, also brings to light systemic shortcomings that must be addressed to prevent such tragedies from recurring. The detention of individuals allegedly involved in the crime and the suspension of responsible officers demonstrate a commitment to accountability. However, it is troubling that the situation escalated to such an extent that a loss of life occurred despite the presence of police. This demands a thorough investigation not only into the actions of those directly responsible for the violence but also into the systemic failures that allowed the situation to spiral out of control. The decision to form a SIT to probe the matter is a step in the right direction. Additionally, authorities must examine the underlying factors contributing to the breakdown of law and order. This includes an assessment of police protocols and training as well as the effectiveness of mechanisms for peacefully resolving land disputes.
Furthermore, the detention of individuals allegedly involved in the crime, including notorious land grabber Ravinder Gupta, alias Gola Shah, sends a clear message that no one is above the law. However, this is not the first instance of detention for Gola Shah. Land disputes, often fuelled by greed and opportunism, have far-reaching consequences for communities and must be addressed with the utmost seriousness. The police must conduct a transparent investigation, regardless of the stature or financial background of the individuals involved, to restore public trust in the justice system. However, it is not enough to merely apprehend those directly responsible for the violence. The administration must focus on the importance of proactive measures to prevent future incidents of land grabbing and violence. This includes strengthening collaboration between the police and revenue authorities. Violence has no place in modern society.
