Pulwama, Mar 7: Hundreds of the residents of Kakapora area today protested against the Government for shifting of a proposed Government Polytechnic College from Begum Bagh.
The residents said they have allocated 57 kanals of land to the college in 2010 when the then Minister for Technical Education RS Chib laid the foundation stone of the college.
The angry protesters said the Government has lately shifted the site of the college to Awanitpora and discriminated against them in education sector.
The protesters rued the “inefficiency and inability” of their legislators, including National Conference MP Ghulam Nabi Ratanpori and People’s Democratic Party MLA Mohammad Khalil Band.
“It is shameful that our constituency representatives have failed to act against the shifting of the college. They have failed to deliver on every development front. They are responsible for snatching education rights from our children,” the protesters said.
The residents said the college has been shifted on the orders of some vested interested political leaders who used their influence to shift the sanctioned college from the proposed site.
The angry residents blocked Pulwama-Srinagar highway for hours to press the Government to look into the matter and revoke the order of shifting the college.
Reports said it was after the assurance of police that their demand would be forwarded to the higher authorities, the protesters dispersed peacefully.
