JAMMU, Mar 8: A tracheoesophgeal puncture with placement of voice prosthesis was performed at SMGS Hospital of Government Medical College Jammu today on a patient, who had undergone total laryngectory (removal of voice box) for cancer of Larynx.
“After total laryngectomy, the patient is breathing through stoma in which pipe opens in the neck and there is no connection between wind pipe, nose and mouth,’’ the doctors said.
They said the voice function in these patients is restored with a voice prosthesis placed in the tracheoesophgeal puncture created by the surgeon. The voice prosthesis is a one way valve that allows air to pass from the trachea (wind pipe)  to esophagus (food pipe) but does not allow food to pass in reverse direction.
The re-directed air vibrates the tissues of food pipe and the patient is able to produce a communicable voice, they added.
The procedure was performed by a team of doctors headed by Dr Padam Singh Jamwal, Associate Professor ENT along with Dr Kamal Kishore and Dr Gopika Kalsotra, Lecturers and Dr Manish Sharma, Registrar.
