SAMBA, May 8: Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, Jammu-Samba-Kathua (JSK) Range, Dr Sunil Gupta, has mandated all Station House Officers (SHOs) in the district to compile and maintain comprehensive lists of drug addicts and peddlers at their respective police stations.
This directive came during a critical meeting held to assess the crime and law enforcement scenario across the district.
During the meeting attended by SSP Samba, Vinay Sharma, Additional SP Samba, DySP DAR Samba, all SDPOs, and SHOs, the DIG JSK Range emphasized the urgent need to accelerate the resolution of pending investigations, including backlog cases and inquest proceedings.
He highlighted the necessity of stringent actions against drug peddlers and other criminal elements undermining societal safety.
Focusing specifically on the narcotics issue, the DIG advocated for a mission-oriented approach to eradicate the drug menace.
He underscored the importance of dismantling the networks involved in the illicit drug trade and urged intensified efforts to identify and seize properties owned by drug peddlers and gangsters, aiming to cripple their operations financially.
Further directives included enhancing surveillance and area domination, strengthening checkpoints (Nakas), and augmenting CCTV surveillance to monitor and thwart anti-national elements and maintain peace.
The DIG also encouraged the installation of more CCTV cameras in collaboration with local communities to bolster surveillance capabilities and ensure a safer environment.
In an innovative move, the DIG announced that police stations would be ranked on various policing aspects, with the top three stations receiving rewards and those at the bottom receiving guidance for improvement.
Dr Gupta also briefed on significant case developments, noting that 70 land dispute cases had been identified for special attention, and key operations against organized crime had led to the arrest of members from notorious gangs like Gataru and most from the Khauf Gang, with efforts ongoing to capture the Khauf Gang leader.

Additional measures reported included the imposition of the Public Safety Act (PSA) on 16 active criminals involved in heinous crimes, bookings under the PIT NDPS Act, and the ongoing searches and arrests of drug peddlers.
The meeting concluded with Dr Gupta issuing directives for the diligent implementation of strategies discussed to reduce pending case backlogs, ensure timely disposal of complaints, control drug-related activities, address vehicle thefts, burglaries, and overall, to maintain a peaceful atmosphere in the District Samba.
