Sir,
The Internatinal Women’s Day was celebrated in the country with fiery speeches and convincing writing and other symbolic gestures.
Though the Day attracts the attention of media and society towards this important issue, however, lot needs to be done to improve the lot of women in this country.
The Women and Child Development Ministry of the Government of India has taken a number of Legislative as well as programmatic measures to enhance the safety of women in the country, the truth of the matter is that the society has not become women sensitive yet. The National Policy for Empowerment of Women adopted in 2001 set many goals covering all the main problem. It has eight goals comprising creation of proper environment for defacto and de jure enjoyment of equal human rights: equal access to participation and decision making and to health, education, social security etc and elimination of all forms of discrminations and violence against women.
Despite having such a legislation, women continue to face sexual harassment at working places, face discrimination and domestic violence.
Let the society give women their due by providing them equal opportunities in all sectors of life. This should be spirit of Women’s Day.
Yours etc….
