India’s vast railway network, often described as the lifeline of the nation, has seen significant strides in track laying over the past decade. Recent revelations from an RTI response shed light on the scale of this gigantic effort, with an average of 7.41 kilometres of tracks added annually between 2014-15 and 2023-24. This data underscores the monumental efforts undertaken. The Indian Railways has embarked on ambitious projects to enhance connectivity and efficiency. The railways are currently adding approximately 15 kilometres of new tracks each day, which is indicative of the Government’s commitment to transforming the nation’s transportation landscape. The unprecedented feat achieved in the financial year 2022-23, where 3,901 kilometres of tracks were laid, represents a historic milestone for the Indian Railways. This remarkable accomplishment, averaging 10.68 kilometres per day, highlights the dedication and ingenuity of railway officials and workers involved in infrastructure projects across the country.
Several factors have contributed to the success of track-laying initiatives. Increased budgetary allocations, streamlined processes for work allotment, and expedited issuance of work orders have facilitated the efficient execution of railway projects. These measures have enabled the railways to achieve record-breaking milestones and set new benchmarks for performance. However, amidst the celebration of these achievements, it is essential to acknowledge the challenges and areas for improvement. Despite the significant progress in track laying, there has been a noticeable decline in laying new lines, with an average of 1.32 kilometres per day over the past decade. This downturn underscores the need for sustained efforts and strategic planning to maintain momentum as new lines have their own set of hurdles: land issues, hilly tracks, tunnels, alignments, etc., to name a few. The expansion of the rail network into new areas is equally vital for fostering inclusive growth and connectivity. For India to become a global economic powerhouse, a robust and efficient transportation network is indispensable. The Indian Railways, with their rich legacy and vast reach, are poised to play a pivotal role in this journey.
