India, China to hold third strategic economic dialogue next week

NEW DELHI/BEIJING, Mar 14: Continuing the series of their high-level engagements this year, India and China will hold their third Strategic Economic Dialogue (SED) in Beijing next week to discuss their trade and economic relations.

The Strategic Economic Dialogue was set up during the visit of then Premier Wen Jiabao to India in December, 2010. Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia will lead an inter-ministerial delegation to China for the dialogue to be held on March 17 and 18, the Indian embassy in Beijing said in a statement today.

The meeting will be co-chaired by Dr Ahluwalia and Xu Shaoshi, Chairman, National Development and Reform Commission of China. The dialogue will cover areas like infrastructure, resource conservation and environmental protection, hi-technology, and energy and policy coordination.

Already five working groups are looking into potential cooperation in these areas.

Dr Ahluwalia will also have other bilateral meetings during his stay in Beijing.

The first dialogue meeting took place in September 2011 in Beijing, while the next round was held in November 2012 in New Delhi.

Earlier last month, the two countries held their sixth defence dialogue in New Delhi at which they discussed increasing the number of interactions between them at various levels. They also agreed to continue expanding the exchanges between their armed forces to enhance mutual trust and understanding.

The defence dialogue had followed the 17th round of borders talks held also in New Delhi. It was headed by National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon and China’s State Councillor Yang Jiechi. (UNI)
