No respite from heatwave in region during next 7 days

JAMMU, May 28: As the heat wave continued to wreak havoc in the Jammu region, the day temperature in Kathua today crossed 47 degrees Celsius and in Samba 45 degrees while the mercury in Jammu city reached 43.6 degrees Celsius today.
The MeT office Srinagar has predicted no respite from the heatwave and hot and dry weather conditions during next seven days. It, however, forecast a slight relief from the heat wave conditions during May 30-31 and June 1 and 2, over most parts of Kashmir and a few hilly areas of Jammu region.

A MeT official said that Jammu recorded a maximum temperature at 43.6 °C on Tuesday and it was 4.5 °C above normal during this period of the season. The night temperature in Jammu, however, remained 23.6 degrees Celsius.
Kathua remained the hottest town in Jammu and Kashmir today with maximum temperature recorded as 47.1 degrees Celsius, followed by Samba town, where the day temperature touched 45.0 degrees C.
Highway town of Ramban today recorded a maximum temperature of 44.8 degrees C, Reasi 43.5, Udhampur 41.3 , Poonch 39.5, Katra town 39.4, Bhaderwah 34.2, Batote 32.4 while Banihal town 31.8 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.
The night temperature, however, at Katra town remained 23.4 degrees C, in Bhaderwah 15.8, Batote 18.9 while at Banihal it was 15.2 degrees Celsius today.
Meanwhile, MeT office Srinagar today predicted a `slight relief’ from the present heat wave for four days from May 30 over Jammu and Kashmir.
The MeT office said there is a possibility of “slight relief from heat wave/hot & dry weather conditions during May 30-31 and June 1-2 over most parts of Kashmir division and a few hilly areas of Jammu division.
However, there will be no respite in heat waves/hot and dry weather conditions over plains of the Jammu division during the next 7 days. On May 28-29, weather generally will remain dry with the possibility of thundershower activity at isolated places.
The weather will turn partly to generally cloudy with light rain/thunderstorm at isolated places during May 30 to June 2 while the weather will remain generally dry from June 3 to June 5 and possibility of light rain, and there could be thunderstorm at isolated places during June 6 and 7.
The MeT office predicted another spell of heat wave `very likely’ over Jammu and Kashmir from June 3 to 5.
The MeT also forecast a brief spell of rain/thunder-shower over a few parts of Kupwara, Handwara, Bandipora, higher reaches of Ganderbal, Kangan, Sonamarg and a few hilly pockets of Kokernag and adjoining areas during the day today.
The hot and humid weather conditions continued to prevail over Kashmir valley on Tuesday disrupting normal activities.
Meanwhile, Srinagar on Tuesday recorded the maximum temperature at 32.6 deg C and it was 6.5 deg C above normal for the summer capital, during this period of the season.
Qazigund on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway had a maximum temperature 33.4, which is 8.1 deg C above normal ( 25.3 deg C) on Tuesday, while the tourist resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded at 27.8 deg C and it was 5.0 deg C above normal for the place.
Famous tourist resort, Gulmarg experienced the maximum temperature at 22.4 deg C and it was 5.2 deg C above normal for the famous ski resort of north Kashmir on Tuesday.
The maximum temperature at the frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara was recorded as 30.9 deg C and the picnic spot of Kokernag 31.0 deg Celsius.
The minimum temperature recorded during the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday across the Kashmir valley was hovering between 2 to 4 deg C above normal, the MeT office said.
Kargil town in the UT of Ladakh was the hottest place today with maximum temperature recorded as 25.5 degrees C, followed by Drass town at 21.0 deg C while Leh town recorded a maximum temperature of 20.8 degrees C today.
