JAMMU, May 29: Director General of Police (DGP) RR Swain conducted a surprise visit to the State Investigation Agency (SIA) Jammu today to review the agency’s operations.
During his visit, he interacted with the officials and was briefed by SP Deepika, Head of the Unit, on the efforts to improve the working conditions for investigation officers.
The briefing covered the filing of charge sheets in significant terror financing and narco-terrorism cases.
The discussion also highlighted the anklet program, pioneered by the CID Wing of the J&K Police. This technology, a first in India, is used as a stringent bail condition to remotely monitor the movements of offenders under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS), and other serious crimes.
DGP Swain emphasized the SIA’s impactful role in investigating terror cases and instilling a fear of law among terrorists and their associates.
He was informed about the SIA’s focus on property attachments, freezing of bank accounts, executing non-bailable warrants, and issuing look-out circulars to exert social and financial pressure on terrorists.
Meanwhile, the DGP agreed with the SIA officials’ proposal that efforts should be intensified to ensure that individuals involved in terrorism, secessionism, narcotics, land mafia, and gangsterism, who are granted bail, bear the cost of the anklets themselves.
According to SIA officials, the public should not bear the expense of the anklets, which cost around Rs 50,000 each.
