Former Councillors express resentment over non-functional street lights

JAMMU, May 30: Many former JMC Councillors have expressed resentment over the non-functional street lights in their Wards and have claimed that the concerned authorities were paying no heed to the repeated requests for correcting the snag in those lights so that people of their areas may heave a sigh of relief in evening hours.
Senior Congress leader and former Councillor from Ward number 39 (Toph Sherkhanian), Rajinder Singh Jamwal informed that about 25 street lights are not working in his Ward from Best Price Mall road to Mast Ram Ashram and it becomes a problem in evening for pedestrians to walk on that path as cases of snatching are also on an increase in the city.
Similarly, Inder Singh Soodan, JMC Councillor of Ward number 44, Nanak Nagar area informed that about 300 street lights in his Ward are not working for the last six months.
“I along with many prominent people of the Ward have brought the issue into the notice of JMC authorities but nothing has been done so far in this regard,” he said.
Soodan also said that the concerned agency to which the JMC has outsourced the work is paying no heed to the repeated phone calls of the people complaining for the damaged street lights.
He further said that many times elders fall while moving in dark and get injured so the concerned JMC should immediately look into the matter and solve the problem.
Pawan Singh, senior BJP leader and former Councillor of Ward 23, Navi Basti area said about 250 street lights are non-functional in his Ward for the last 4-5 months and the repairmen of the agency visits but many times leaves without correcting the fault.
“Sometimes they say switches are not available with them and other times they have a different excuse but the public is suffering due to this especially in evening hours,” he maintained.
Former Councillor of Ward number 11, old Jammu city, Anita Sharma said about 10-12 street lights in her Ward are non-functional for the last some months and the concerned agency pays no heed while the lineman of the area looks into the issue but to some limit only.
Similar complaints were there from many other former Councillors also.
