Heatwave persists in Jammu, North; to reduce gradually

JAMMU, June 2: The Meteorological Department, Srinagar has predicted intermittent light to moderate rain coupled with thunder-storm and gusty winds during the next week in Jammu and Kashmir.

The MeT office also forecast that there will be no heatwave over Kashmir division during the next eight days. The people will heave little sigh of relief from the hot weather conditions in the plain areas of Valley.
The weather will generally remain hot and dry with heatwave over plains of Jammu division till June 4. On June 8-9 the weather will remain partly to generally cloudy.
Jammu recorded the maximum temperature at 42.9 degree C on Saturday and it was 3.5 deg C above normal during this period of the season. The Temple City today recorded 41.6 deg C, which is again 2.2 degrees above normal, whereas the night temperature in Jammu remained 25.8 degrees C.
The weather will remain partly cloudy with the possibility of light rain and thunder at a few places during the next 24 hours till Monday.
From June 4 to 7, the MeT office predicted the weather will be partly to generally cloudy with intermittent light to moderate rain/thunder at many places with gusty winds at few places. Few places may receive moderate intensity showers for a brief period over Jammu and Kashmir.
It said the weather will remain partly to generally cloudy during June 8 and 9 while it will be dry from June 10 to June 13.
The MeT office has advised farmers to suspend farm operations during June 5 and 6.
The minimum temperature at Qazigund, Pahalgam and Kokernag weather stations of the Kashmir valley was recorded below normal during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.
Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded the minimum temperature at 13 deg C, Qazigund 10 deg C, Pahalgam 6.4 deg C, Kokernag 10.2 deg C and Gulmarg 8 deg C during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, the MeT office said.
Srinagar recorded the maximum temperature 27.5 deg on Saturday and it was 1.2 deg C above normal, Pahalgam had a maximum 24.1 deg C and it was 1.3 deg C above normal for the tourist spot in south Kashmir.
Picnic spot of Kokernag recorded the maximum at 27.2 deg C and the famous ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded 17.3 deg C the previous day, the MeT office said.
Meanwhile, the heat wave conditions persisted in Jammu on Sunday which recorded the maximum temperature at 41.6 degrees Celsius, which is 2.2 notches above season’s average.
However, the day temperature in Jammu was 1.3 degrees Celsius less than that of the previous day, a spokesperson of the MeT department said, adding that the city may witness relief from the prevailing conditions after June 4.
He said hot and dry weather over plains of Jammu division is likely to continue till June 4. After that during the next three days, Jammu may see light to moderate rain or thunder at many places with gusty winds at few places. The weather is likely to remain partly cloudy on June 8 and 9, the spokesperson said.
He said Katra, the base camp for pilgrims visiting Mata Vaishno Devi shrine atop Trikuta hills in Reasi district, recorded a high of 38.8 degrees Celsius and a low of 24.8 degrees Celsius.
Bhaderwah town today recorded a maximum temperature of 33.4 deg C and minimum 12.0 degC, Batote town maximum 30.5 deg and minimum 17.0 while Banihal town maximum 31.1 deg and minimum 11.4 deg C temperature on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Northwest, Central, and East India are expected to experience heatwave conditions with reduced intensity for the next 3 days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday.
According to IMD, “Heatwave conditions are very likely to prevail in some parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and in isolated pockets of J&K, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Odisha and Jharkhand from today till June 5.”
The Weather Department has predicted no significant change in maximum temperatures over Northwest India during the next 3 days and over West India during the next 48 hours.
“Thereafter, the temperature over these regions is very likely to fall by 2-3 deg C,” the IMD said.
On the advancement of Southwest Monsoon, the IMD said, “Conditions are favourable for further advance of monsoon into some more parts of central Arabian Sea, Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, West central and Northwest Bay of Bengal during the next 2-3 days.”
The Weather Department has also predicted rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over several parts of India including, Northeast, Northwest, and South Peninsular region of the country for the next few days.
