LEH, June 3: Ladakh Legal Services Authority (LLSA), in collaboration with Ladakh Police, organized a one-day seminar-cum-orientation program on the ‘Three New Criminal Laws’ to be implemented nationwide from 1st July onwards, at Arya Nagarjuna Auditorium, Central Institute of Buddhist Studies, Choglamsar, Leh, Ladakh.
Justice Atul Sreedharan, Judge of the High Court of Jammu Kashmir Ladakh and Executive Chairman of LLSA UT Ladakh, was the chief guest, and Advisor Dr Pawan Kotwal was the guest of honour on the occasion.
In the inaugural session, Dr Pawan Kotwal addressed the gathering, emphasizing the importance of the three new Criminal Laws framed by Parliament, keeping in view modern times, the change in the pattern of crimes, and the need for steady investigation, trial and justice.
“Three new Criminal Laws, namely, The Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita, and the Bhartiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, will replace the Indian Penal Code, 1860; Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898; and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872, respectively, with effect from 1st July,” he said and informed that in regard to the capacity building, almost 40 percent of the Ladakh police personnel have been trained to be made aware of the new laws.
Advocate E V Chandru and Advocate Sharat Chandru were invited from Tamil Nadu to train the officials of UT Ladakh in respect of the three new criminal laws. Additionally, Tsewang Phuntsok, CJM Leh, took a session on Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The chief guest of the occasion, Justice Sreedharan emphasized the multi-sectoral role of police personnel and highlighted the harmonious working relationship between legal workers and police personnel.
The third session featured Ishtiaq Kacho, AIG (CIV), and Murad Bhat, Consultant KPMG, who shed light on the preparation for the implementation of the new laws in UT Ladakh.
The programme was attended by Deputy Commissioner Leh, SSP Leh ,CJM Leh, Member Secretary Ladakh Legal Services Authority, Senior Police Officers from Prosecution wing and Forensic wing, Judicial Officials , Advocates of the bar of Leh & Kargil and police personnel.
