JAMMU, June 6: Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu has achieved another feat by getting allotted 16 more MD seats in various streams, besides being the first institution in Jammu and Kashmir where MD course in Biochemistry is being started and that too from current session.
The Medical Assessment & Rating Board (MARB) of National Medical Commission (NMC) had invited applications from Medical Colleges across the country for start of new PG courses and enhancement of PG seats for the Academic Year 2024-25. GMC Jammu too, under the leadership of Dr Ashutosh Gupta as Principal & Dean, had applied for starting MD Biochemistry Course and enhancement of MD seats in Medicine and Pediatrics departments.
After complete evaluation of the applications submitted by the GMC Jammu, Medical Assessment & Rating Board (MARB) of NMC found them in order and complete in all terms and accordingly, allotted 16 new MD seats to GMC Jammu, 4 seats to Department of Biochemistry, and 6 each to Departments of Pediatrics and Medicine.
These new seats were allotted to GMC Jammu as per the notification of NMC dated 03-06-2024. With addition of 16 more seats, the total number of Post-Graduate MD/ MS seats in GMC Jammu has been enhanced from 198 to 214.

Commenting on this achievement, Dr Ashutosh Gupta said all the credit goes to our Administrative Secretary Health & Medical Education, Dr Syed Abid Rashid as well as HoD Biochemistry Dr Rachna Sabharwal, HoD Medicine Dr Fayaz Wani and HoD Pediatrics Dr Ghanshyam Saini.
Dr Gupta said it is a matter of pride for them that this is for the first time in J&K that MD course in Biochemistry is being started in any Government institution, as till now no Government institution is imparting this degree in the UT. He said allotment of 16 more seats means 16 additional doctors will undergo specialization from this academic year.
The announcement of increase in PG seats has also brought cheer to the Post-Graduate aspirants. “We had our hopes pinned on the seat increase,” said a medical student. “Now many more candidates will be able to pursue post-graduation in these specialties,” he added.
