JAMMU, June 12: As the deadline for free updation of the Aadhaar cards is approaching nearer, Aadhaar centres being run by various banks as well as by the designated Post Offices are surprisingly found closed without any valid reason, thus leading to lots of problems for those who want their Aadhaar to be updated.
The Government has made it mandatory for people to link their Aadhaar cards to bank accounts, mobile numbers and extended deadline for the same to June 14, 2024.
The common people are facing problems due to either the closure of Aadhaar centers or non-functional Aadhaar card machines due to technical problems.
Furthermore, students complained that regulations for the Aadhaar updation are stricter. If their Aadhaar card numbers are not uploaded, scholarships and grants will not be released to educational institutions.

“If the Government wants that one must get his/her Aadhaar card number, then service for the same should be provided. Even the employees at the designated Aadhaar centres in J&K Bank and Canara Bank at Shalamar Road are clueless. There’s no information or accountability,” said Rajni Bala, a college student.
“We know the importance of Aadhaar card, it is being required everywhere. So, the people are applying for Aadhaar cards or getting it updated, but the Aadhaar card center at Post Office, near DBN School, Mubarak Mandi is closed. In such a situation, common people are making rounds of Aadhaar card centers daily and returning empty handed,” claimed Manohar Lal Sharma.
“While most of the Aadhaar centres are closed, the functional one are over charging from the people to get their Aadhaar cards updated. Someone informed me about the Aadhaar centre in BSNL office at Exchange Road, where there is no rush but the Aadhaar website was down due to server problems. When I visited there next day, they charged Rs 100 from me to update my Aadhaar card,” claimed Shallini Gupta, a housewife.
“The Government keeps on wasting our time, energy and fuel for the reasons best known to them,” she added.
Pertinent to mention here that the Government has allotted the centers for making Aadhaar cards and updating old Aadhaar cards in designated branches of Banks and Post Offices, but these centres are lying virtually closed as no work is being done there for the last one month.
Common people are reaching out the different centers every day, but they have to return disappointed due to not being able to get the work done from the centres. This problem has persisted for more than a month.
According to Aadhaar regulations, individuals must update proof of identity and address every 10 years. No fee is charged for online updation while Rs 50 are charged in case of some other updations through the centers.
When contacted, Deputy Commissioner, Jammu Sachin Kumar Vaishya assured the Excelsior, “If there is any type of problem or complaint against the non-availability of Aadhaar centres or overcharging by any centre, one can register his or her complaint, on my Whatsapp Number (9797786766) , so that we can take an early action to rectify their grievance timely.”
