RAJOURI, June 16: Residents of Chingus and Narian area in Rajouri staged a significant protest against the illegal activities of a mining mafia, which they allege is operating with impunity and causing extensive damage to local infrastructure and essential water resources.
The public outcry underscores the inaction of the Mining Department of Rajouri, who were repeatedly informed about the issue but they failed to take decisive action.
Locals alleged that illegal mining activities in the area have severely impacted the National Highway and compromised the Dug Well Scheme of the Jal Shakti Department, leaving many without access to clean water. Despite multiple complaints to the Mining Department, vehicles are not being seized, and no significant measures have been implemented to curb the illegal mining operations.
“The mining mafia is destroying our roads and depleting water resources, and yet, the administration remains silent,” said a local resident. “We have informed the Mining Department and District Administration numerous times, but no action has been taken. This negligence is unacceptable,” a protester said.
The protest highlighted the urgent need for intervention by higher authorities to address the environmental and infrastructural damages issue with the unauthorized mining activities. The public demanded immediate action to halt the illegal operations and hold those accountable.
The residents of Chingus- Narian called upon the District Administration Rajouri to enforce the law and protect their community from the detrimental effects of illegal mining. The ongoing negligence not only endangers public resources but also undermines trust in local governance, they added.
