THIMPU, June 24 : Keen to attract more Indian tourists to its picturesque locales, the Bhutanese government held an inaugural Indian Tourism Roadshow, across Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Kolkata, from June 17 to 21, that saw enthusiastic response.
Celebrating 50 years of Bhutanese tourism, the event attracted over 700 Indian travel agents and 600 companies, showcasing exclusive offers from 18 Bhutanese exhibitors, Kuenselonline reported.
This May saw 19,212 Indian tourists visit Bhutan, marking a 100 per cent increase compared to the same period last year. Indians also comprised 58 per cent of Bhutan’s total tourists in the first quarter of 2024.
The Bhutanese government is targeting 300,000 tourists annually, emphasising on high-value, low-volume tourism to maintain sustainable numbers.
Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay in a recent interview highlighted Bhutan’s limited capacity for large tourist inflows. “Bhutan does not have an absorptive capacity for a large number of tourists,” he is quoted as saying.
Chief Marketing Officer Carissa Nimah noted the strong interest from Indian travel agents at the roadshow. “The enthusiastic participation from Indian travel agents and the positive interactions with Bhutanese exhibitors underscored the strong interest in Bhutan as a travel destination,” she said. “We look forward to welcoming more Indian visitors to experience the unique beauty and culture of our Kingdom,” added Carissa Nimah. Bhutan has emerged as one of the top destinations for Indian travellers, especially during the summer months. (UNI)
