JAMMU, Mar 24: Two day national conference on “Environmental Issues, Concerns and Solutions” organized by Department of Environmental Sciences commenced today at General Rajinder Singh auditorium, University of Jammu.
The conference was inaugurated by BR Sharma, Principal Secretary Planning and Development, who while speaking said that environmental issues concerns all of us and being a stakeholder in the deliberations in the sense that what is happening around us, whatever we do or whatever action we take, its result and consequences are equally important for all of us and for even those who are yet to be born and brought up on this earth.
In his presidential address Prof Mohan Paul Singh Ishar, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu said that environment being dynamic has been changing even before the intervention of mankind and there have been extinctions much earlier before the human intervention.
He asked all those who are participating in such conferences to disseminate the knowledge and make people aware about those things related to environment so that a genuine understanding can be created among all those to make sure that progress is in such a way that the damage is minimum to the environment, forests, water resources and referring to the J&K.
On the occasion, conference souvenir and abstract book was also released.
Prof AK Raina, Co-convener deliberated upon the theme of the conference and said that the environment is one of the important entities and without this life is not possible. There are many issues that need to be addressed, like deterioration of the agriculture and forest land, soil deterioration, resource depletion, overall deterioration of the environment, public health issues, livelihood security of the people, increasing level of pollution- air, water, noise, health and hygiene problem, ozone depletion, global warming, growing water scarcity, falling ground water table etc. These issues need to be addressed to fulfill our concerns about the environment, he added.
Earlier Prof RK Rampal, Head, Department of Environmental Sciences presented welcome address, whereas in the end Dr Deepika Slathia, Organising Secretary presented vote of thanks.
Among others present include OP Vidyarthi, Prof GA Bhat, CM Seth, WWF India, Prof RC Gupta, Prof RS Jasrotia, Amarjeet Singh, Prof MK Jyoti, Prof PK Srivastava, DSW, Heads of Teaching Departments, faculty members, scholars, delegates, staff and students.
