LEH, July 10: The Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) have renewed their call for the Government of India to resume discussions with local leaders of Leh and Kargil regarding Ladakh’s demands.
These demands were previously presented to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) before the recent Lok Sabha elections.
Following a pause due to the elections, the LAB, led by Co-Chairman Chering Dorjey Lakrook, met on Monday in Leh to strategize further advocacy for their four-point demands. These include full statehood for Ladakh, constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule, recruitment and job reservations for unemployed youth, and the creation of separate parliamentary constituencies for Leh and Kargil.
The LAB plans to hold a joint meeting with the KDA, chaired by Thupstan Chhewang, to push for renewed dialogue with the MHA.
The LAB emphasized the urgency of restarting the recruitment process in Ladakh to provide relief to the region’s unemployed youth.
They also supported the proposal for a mandatory Ladakh Resident Certificate for contractors participating in tenders with project limits up to Rs 5 crore.
Meanwhile, the KDA, led by Co-Chairmen Qamar Ali Akhone and Haji Asgar Ali Karbalai, reiterated their call for the resumption of dialogue with local leaders.
They stressed the importance of addressing the fundamental rights and essential safeguards related to land, employment, reservation, and identity for the people of Ladakh.
The KDA highlighted the need for the MHA to reconvene the high-power committee to restart discussions promptly.
In their press release, the KDA stated, “Since the implementation of the Jammu & Kashmir Reorganization Act, 2019, the people of Ladakh have been fighting for their fundamental rights.”
They emphasized that the issues outlined in their four-point agenda are critical for the welfare and future of Ladakh and must be addressed comprehensively and without delay.
