Newspaper owner held for leaking official information

JAMMU, July 10: Owner of a newspaper here has been booked under the Official Secrets Act (OSA) for allegedly circulating some sensitive information in WhatsApp groups.

Tarun Behl, owner of The Sree Times and Aasman newspaper besides several educational institutions, has been arrested and booked in case FIR number 80/2024 under Sections 3/5 of the Official Secrets Act 1923, and 49/353 BNS at Police Station Channi Himmat.
A police official said that Behl was booked after Police Station Channi Himmat received information through reliable sources that a secret document issued by Police Headquarters containing details with regard to security was in circulation in WhatsApp groups, “The Sree Times” and “Aasman” newspapers, handled by one Tarun Behl, with malafide intention to spread misinformation.
On this, he said, Behl, who owns several luxurious cars and properties worth crores, was arrested and booked under the relevant law of the land and taken into police remand for four days.
Police have launched further investigation into the case and urged the media houses and WhatsApp group Admins not to upload and circulate any information and the document that jeopardize the security and the sovereignty of the nation.
“Otherwise, those acting irresponsibly shall be taken to task as per the law of the land,” warned police.
