SRINAGAR, July 11: Despite significant expenditure on constructing tourist huts in the Handwara area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, nearly thirteen huts have fallen into ruins due to official apathy.
Residents of Rajwar and Mawar areas allege that these huts, meant to benefit locals and tourists at sites like Wudar Balla and Langat, have fallen into disrepair. Originally intended to boost local tourism and economic benefits, these huts now stand unused and dilapidated. “We were hopeful that these huts would boost our local economy and provide a place for tourists to stay, but now they are just eyesores,” said Abdul Gaffar, a local resident.
The residents expressed disappointment over the mismanagement of public funds by the Government due to neglect and demanded urgent repairs to restore the huts to their intended purpose. “There is no point in spending so much money if the huts are not kept in good condition. We need these huts repaired so they can be useful again,” Mohammad Tahir, another local resident, said, adding that restoring these huts could rejuvenate the local economy and attract visitors once again.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Handwara, Aziz Ahmad Rather, said that they would take up the issue with the relevant department for prompt resolution.
