JAMMU, July 11: State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) in collaboration with Government Medical College Jammu organized a workshop on organ/tissue donation and Transplantation in GMCH Jammu in the Organ Donation Month (July) with the theme “Angdaan Jan Jagrukta Abhiyan” today.
The workshop with the participation of over 130 medical professionals was inaugurated by Dr Ashutosh Gupta , Principal and Dean, GMC Jammu along with Dr Elias Sharma, HoD Urology & Renal Transplant and Nodal Officer SOTTO J&K, Dr Sanjeev Puri, Joint Director, SOTTO J&K and Dr Narinder Bhatial, Medical Superintendent GMCH Jammu.
The inaugural ceremony was followed by the release of SOTTOs second annual newsletter “Naman” by the dignitaries.
Endorsing the need for engagement by medical professionals, Dr Ashutosh Gupta , Principal and Dean, GMC Jammu said, “Nothing can be more self-less than truly giving those in need, a ray of hope and more precisely, a second chance to live. In our country with many deaths happening due to road accidents, deceased donor transplantation offers a second chance of life for many.
Dr Sanjeev Puri, Joint Director SOTTO provided insights into the National Organ Transplant Programme (NOTP) under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. He said that GoI is implementing NOTP to promote organ donation and transplantation across all States/Union Territories of India.
Dr Elias Sharma, HoD Urology & Renal Transplant and Nodal Officer SOTTO J&K delivered a lecture emphasizing the critical need for cadaveric donation in India. He dispelled myths surrounding organ donation and transplantation, stressing its potential to save numerous lives.
Dr Haroon Salaria, HoD Neuro Surgery spoke on “Brain Stem Death Declaration.” He said that brain death, also commonly referred to as death by neurologic criteria, has been considered a legal definition of death for decades. Its determination involves many considerations and subtleties.
Dr Ashok Sharma, HoD Ophthalmology gave a description about Eye Donation and corneal Transplantation and it’s types. He endorsed the message “Eyes Never Dies” and motivated every one to pledge for eye/organ donation.
Dr Narinder Bhatial, Medical Superintendent GMCH Jammu explained the sequence of events in a cadaveric organ donation offering a clear understanding of the process.
Anshu Sharma, Consultant (IEC/Media) SOTTO encouraged the audience to participate in the Organ Donation Pledge Drive under Ayushman Bhav.
The programme was anchored by Irfan Ahmad Lone, Transplant Coordinator SOTTO and whole stage was managed by Nisha Kumari, DEO, SOTTO, Ashwani Kumar and Ashok Singh (Drivers) SOTTO.
