MVD starts drive against overloading, overcharging

JAMMU, July 11: Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) here today launched a drive to check violations especially the overloading and overcharging by e-rickshaws and other public transport vehicles from the passengers and pilgrims visiting Shree Amarnath and Shree Mata Vaishno Devi Shrines.
A handout of MVD stated that the drive was carried out on the directions of Administrative Secretary Transport, Transport Commissioner J&K and RTO Jammu at Canal Road, Bhagwati Nagar, Fourth Tawi Bridge, Railway Station, Bahu Plaza and other places by a team of RTO Jammu comprising ARTO BOI Passenger, Kuldeep Singh and MVIs Jasbir Singh, SMVI Aman Sharma along with other supporting staff.
About 300 passenger vehicles including e-rickshaws were checked during the drive out of which 60 were challaned and a minibus was seized while e-challans for an amount of Rs. 45,000 were also issued on the spot.
During checking a number of e-rickshaws were found involved in overcharging and overloading and were challaned.
The MVD team warned the violators to follow the norms laid for ferrying passengers.
Kuldeep Singh, ARTO, BOI, Jammu also conducted counselling of crews/operators during the drive and appealed them to be friendly with passengers and extend every possible help to the tourists and pilgrims visiting Jammu city for Shree Amarnath Yatra and Shree Vaishno Devi Shrine.
He further asked the drivers to charge the genuine fare fixed by the authorities from the passengers.
The MVD team stated that the higher authorities are quite sensitive and will definitely go strict against the habitual traffic violators and all operators must be aware that the vehicles should ply on designated routes by adhering to all the traffic rules in the larger interest of road safety.
